In Favor of Opposition to Religion

Are religion and science in conflict? I think that the answer, for the most part, is yes. An obvious contemporary example is Young-Earth Creationism. Around 44% of Americans are Young-Earth Creationists, mostly Protestants who hold to a literal interpretation of Genesis. Nearly half of the American public reject the most fundamental concept in the life sciences and believe, in the face of mountains of counterevidence, that the Earth is less than 10,000 years old. Almost all of them believe this for religious reasons. Creationism is also the rule in the Muslim world.

Catholics, to their credit, don’t treat the Pentateuch as a record of historical fact–instead treating it as an allegory for…uh…eh…oh my God, it’s a bunny!



Yet, it is a dogma of the Catholic Church that all of humanity descends from an original couple. This is contradicted by the evidence of population genetics, which tells us that the human population has never been fewer than 10,000 individuals in the. [insert more here]
